2018 BMW X2 sDrive20i Review

The family is now complete with the recent introduction of the BMW X2 to Australia.

BMW have finally filled the gap in the X Series range of SUVs with the X2 quite a number of years after their other small models, the X1 and X3.

It’s beyond me as to why there needs to be such a wide choice of compacts when for most, three will suffice.

But if there’s any car maker that’s all about options, then it’s gotta be a German.

Exterior

Under the spot light was the front-wheel drive BMW X2 sDrive20i with M Sport X package.

For the X2 and compact SUVs just like it, it looks much like a hatchback with an SUV shape.

It sit marginally higher on the chassis with a wide derriere and is otherwise unmistakably BMW from grille to tail.

The ‘X’ of the M Sport X just adds grey plastic side skirts, front insert and wheel arches to the presentation.

The two badges on the rear C-pillars are somewhat polarising for some having no perceivable purpose there.

Interior

The interior is striking from the moment you open the door as the orange leather seats contrast against the black cabin.

While the rest is as expected – very BMW with a sleek but minimalist dashboard plus touchscreen, dial control and rocker gear shifter.

The cabin feels small, again, like a hatch, not so much width-wise but there isn’t a whole heap of legroom especially in the back. Though the roofline is higher for taller folk and there is also a sunroof.

Despite the cramped quarters, the seats are comfortable and nicely moulded with under–leg extension for the front seats and a good bucket in the rear with dedicated ISOFIX ports.

Disappointingly in the BMW X2 sDrive20i there are no powered seats.

Features

As mentioned there is a sunroof as well as a powered tailgate that is unexpected (or unnecessary) in a vehicle this size but is commonplace amongst SUVs and convenient nonetheless.

Other unique features include auto dimming side mirrors, Induction charger, projection HUD for the driver with info on the speed limit, cruise control, sat-nav and radio stations.

In addition to your cruise control speed on the HUD, there is a small green light indicator on speedometer marking off the selected speed in another neat feature.

The electric park brake could do with an auto release.

Drive and Engine

The drive is everything you’d envisage a BMW being.

Good suspension, a solid and quiet ride, supreme comfort and a little bit of energy to burn.

The steering is very direct almost to the point of needing to be very precise with your control.

Though little harsher than average, the suspension is still compliant and liveable.

The X2 sDrive20i really has some go, with performance you’d expect from a sportier model, though it seems to top out.

But low down where you want the power for a luxurious drive that’s quick off the mark.

Safety

Equipped with most modern safety features the BMW X2 sDrive20i comes with forward collision warning, a parking assistant, lane departure, blind spot warning, pedestrian alert and cruise control with braking function

For lane related detection, there is a vibration warning in steering wheel instead of the audible sound.

Summary

The BMW X2 sDrive20i is another small compact SUV from BMW and possesses a typical BMW standard for its drive, power, appearance, comfort, fit and finish, and build quality.

My gripe is with the small SUV category itself which greatly limits storage capacity which is not all that different from a hatchback.

I guess all the brands need to have a model to be competitive – BMW has two.

But for what it is, the X2 is really good and was a pleasure to drive.
