Golf R Cabin:
Inside is an oasis of calmness, even on a track.
Seats are firm , and gently gently hug. There is ample safety to keep things tidy even when you dial up the Dynaudio, and move in to Race Mode.
MK7 has been around for 7 years, and MK 7.5 brough few changes inside. The cabin still feels fairly fresh, with quality materials used throughout. Switches and knobs fall to hand easily, with much now subsumed by the infotainment system.
Most of the surfaces are matte to keep blinding sun out of the eyes of the driver.
For a full list of cabin technology, see the Golf R page at Volkswagen’s website.
Golf R Drive:
Golf R has 4motion AWD, and a 7 speed DSG transmission.
City trips are best in Comfort or ECO mode. Race Mode is fun, but lowers some of the protections city traffic demands
You can save you favourite combinations in the “Individual” Mode for further customisation.
Steering makes you feel like your hands attached to the wheels psyichally. There is a sense of power and precision that invites extra confidence.
0-100 is done in 4.8 seconds, and is fun, but chugs the fuel like a drunken sailor.
You might be surprised to hear that a hot hatch, happy at hooning around the Nürburgring, is just as happy on the annual roadtrip. Golf R is a grand tourer.
It is just as happy in a Coles carpark, and in city traffic, so, it is also a city car.
It is near perfect. OK, it isn’t luxurious like a BMW, or as eye-catching as a McLaren. It lacks the visceral vibrations of a Mustang, or the outright speed of a Ludicrous+ Tesla.
However, it does one thing none of those others can, its driver can live with it daily. It’s cheaper than the cheapest Beemer, easier to get in to than a McLaren, safer than a Mustang, and doesn’t need charging like a Tesla.
Golf R gives its chuffed owner bragging rights, which he or she will never use. Why? If a Golf R owner wants an opinion, there are only too happy to provide it themselves.
Conclusion:
Golf R feeds your soul
Unlike other hot hatches and super hatches, the suspension rearrange vital organs, yet, looks the part, in an understated kind of way.
Golf R doesn’t shout look at me, but it definitely stands in a mirror flexing its biceps while taking selfies.
