Santa Fe Hybrid Quick Update
The turbo petrol/electric Santa Fe is the first hybrid Hyundai SUV to be offered in Australia, and builds on the appeal of a family-favourite model that is already among the most desirable on the market.
Available in Santa Fe Elite and Highlander, the Hybrid powertrain combines turbo performance and all-wheel-drive capability with hybrid efficiency and smoothness.
Santa Fe Hybrid uses just 6.0L/100km on the official combined cycle and 6.2L/100km on the urban cycle, which makes it 17 percent more economical than the efficient turbo-diesel when driving in the city and suburbs, where the average family SUV will spend most time.
Adding further appeal to Santa Fe is a newly available 6-seater option for Hybrid Highlander variants, which brings a pair of second-row captain’s seats and greater interior flexibility to suit a range of lifestyles.
The choice of six or seven seat configurations in Santa Fe is yet another element that makes the model a uniquely practical family vehicle.
New, efficiency-enhancing aero type machine faced 19-inch alloy wheels complete Elite and Highlander Hybrid variants, setting them apart with a unique look.
Interior updates
Santa Fe continues to deliver an advanced user experience with the availability of dual large, high-definition infotainment and instrument cluster displays.

Santa Fe Engine and drivetrains
New Smartstream G1.6 Turbo Hybrid
Joining petrol and turbo-diesel powertrains for Santa Fe is a dynamic and efficient new Hybrid system, which combines a 1.6-litre T-GDi Smartstream engine and a 44.2kW electric motor, which draws power from a 1.49kWh lithium-ion polymer battery.
The hybrid powertrain is teamed with all-wheel drive and a newly developed 6-speed automatic transmission.
The turbo petrol + electric hybrid system seamlessly delivers muscular combined outputs of 169kW and 350Nm, while maximising efficiency and minimising CO2 emissions.
As well as providing a refined, quiet and eco-friendly driving experience, Santa Fe Hybrid produces more torque than the 3.5 MPi (across a broader rev range), and greater power than the 2.2 CRDi, while using less fuel on the official combined cycle.
The Hybrid powertrain builds on the efficiency advantage over the turbo-diesel on the official combined cycle – 6.0 vs 6.1L/100km – to be 17 percent more efficient on the urban cycle – 6.2 vs 7.5L/100km – which represents the driving conditions the average family SUV will experience during most of the vehicle’s working life.

Personalised profiles
In Elite and Highlander variants regular user as well as guest settings for the cluster, display, media and driving mode can be stored in discrete profiles.
Quiet Mode
Quiet Mode mutes the speakers in the rear and sets a limit on the volume through the front speakers, to give rear occupants the hush they need to talk or sleep.
Remote rear air-conditioning control
Remote control of the rear air-conditioning lets the driver easily adjust the settings for rear occupants, and brings the ability to disable the rear air-conditioning controls.
Heated & ventilated seats
Santa Fe Highlander gives front occupants the year-round comfort of heated and ventilated seats.
Three-stage heating elements warm the seats in cool weather, and three-stage ventilation fans blow a gentle stream of cooling air through the leather perforation during hot weather.
Highlander variant also features heated outboard second-row seats.
Panoramic glass sunroof
A panoramic glass sunroof brings light and a sense of openness to Santa Fe Highlander’s cabin, with a motorised sunblind for when shade is required.
Walk-in Switch
A one-touch ‘Walk-in’ switch on the kerb side eliminates the need to manually flip and slide the second-row seatback, for easy access to the third row.
In addition, an electric release in the cargo bay allows one-touch folding of the seatbacks.
Safe Exit Assist (SEA)
The Safe Exit Assist (SEA) system in Active, Elite and Highlander reduces the risk of occupants exiting Santa Fe when the surroundings make it unsafe to do so.
The system works in conjunction with the radar sensors on either side of the rear bumper to detect vehicles approaching from the rear.
When the vehicle is stopped and SEA is active, the system scans Santa Fe’s rear path.
If a door is opened while an approaching vehicle is detected, the system will issue an audible alert and display a warning in the instrument cluster, advising that the exiting occupant should ‘watch for traffic’.
The electronic child safety lock system provides and additional layer of protection, by allowing the driver to lock the rear doors via a switch, to prevent children seated in the rear of Santa Fe from opening the doors.
Additionally, the electronic child safety locking system works with the SEA system to prevent the unlocking of the rear doors when it is not safe to do so, providing an additional message advising that the exiting occupant should ‘Check surroundings then try again’.
Rear Occupant Alert (ROA)
The Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) system aims to prevent the unintentional leaving or locking-in of children or pets in Santa Fe Elite and Highlander.
The system utilises an ultrasonic sensor in the headlining to detect movement in the cabin.
When active, the system registers the entry of rear occupants via the rear doors opening and closing.
Upon opening the driver’s door after parking, ROA issues a warning chime and prompts the driver via the cluster to ‘Check rear seats’.
If the user proceeds to close the door and lock the vehicle, the ROA system then becomes operational for a 24-hour period.
During this time if movement is detected inside the cabin the system will activate the horn for a period of 25 seconds to alert the driver and others to the situation.
SMARTSENSETM SAFETY
Santa Fe features an extensive standard suite of SmartSenseTM driver assistance and advanced active safety technologies, and protects occupants with a suite of seven airbags, including a front centre side airbag.
The latter, which is mounted in the left of the driver’s seat backrest, can prevent or reduce the severity of injuries caused by collisions between the front occupants, or collisions between occupants and interior components, in the event of a side impact collision.
Santa Fe’s SmartSenseTM suite include the following features:
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) – Junction Turning
The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system, when active, utilises the front radar sensor and windscreen-mounted camera to detect and monitor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in front of Santa Fe.
If a potential collision is detected, the system’s Forward Collision Warning (FCW) function will sound a warning chime and display a warning in the cluster. FCW is active from speeds of 10 km/h, up to 85 km/h for pedestrians and cyclists, or 180 km/h for vehicles.
Additionally, FCA works in conjunction with FCW to automatically apply the vehicle’s brakes in the case of a potential collision (where no driver intervention is detected after a FCW system warning).
FCA is active above speeds of approximately 10km/h, and will attempt to bring the vehicle to a complete stop if activated up to speeds of 65 km/h (pedestrians and cyclists) or 75 km/h (vehicles). When activated above these speeds, FCA will slow the vehicle to reduce the severity of a potential collision.
In all scenarios of operation (visual and audible warning, slowing down, or bringing the vehicle to complete stop), pedestrian and cyclist detection will only occur where a pedestrian is moving at speeds below 10 km/h and a cyclist below 20 km/h.
A Junction Turning (FCA-JT) function detects oncoming traffic when turning right (with the right indicator activated) at an intersection. If a collision appears likely, the brakes are applied to reduce the chance of a collision.
FCA-JT is operational at vehicle speeds of 10 km/h to 30 km/h while the oncoming vehicle speed is between approximately 30 km/h and 70 km/h.
Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)
BCA detects vehicles in Santa Fe’s blind spot and provides a visual alert in the exterior mirrors. If the driver proceeds to activate the corresponding indicator lights, a flashing visual warning is provided and an alert is sounded. The system is in operation at vehicle speeds of 20 km/h or above.
The system also scans for vehicles approaching rapidly from the rear, and uses the same warning measures to alert the driver of vehicles approaching at high speed which may soon enter Santa Fe’s blind spot.
Operational at speeds above 60km/h, BCA can initiate the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system to help avoid a collision with an approaching vehicle, next to or behind Santa Fe, which it deems as being at a high risk of contact due to its proximity.
As an avoidance manoeuvre the system gently applies braking to the wheels on the opposing side of the potential collision point, to steer the vehicle away from a potential collision and avoid or mitigate against damage.
BCA in Santa Fe also can mitigate against potential collisions when exiting a parallel park.
Driver Attention Warning (DAW) with Leading Vehicle Departure Alert
Driver Attention Warning (DAW) continually monitors the vehicle’s position within the lane using the windscreen-mounted camera, while tracking steering inputs, brake pedal inputs, and elapsed time since last break.
Should the system detect careless driving – such as sudden steering/braking inputs and/or inability to keep within a lane – the ‘Attention Level’ display on the cluster will continually decrease.
Should the level decrease to a certain threshold, the DAW system will recommend that the driver takes a break.
DAW is in operation at speeds between 60km/h and 180km/h.
The system also features Leading Vehicle Departure Alert, which monitors the vehicle ahead when Santa Fe is stopped in traffic.
If the vehicle ahead drives off, and the Santa Fe driver fails to accelerate away, the system will sound a chime to alert the potentially inattentive driver.
High Beam Assist (HBA)
High Beam Assist (HBA) scans the road ahead of Santa Fe using the windscreen-mounted camera, monitoring for street lights, as well as headlights and taillights of vehicles in front.
Upon detection, the system automatically adjusts headlight range, switching between high and low beam.
HBA is active at speeds of 40km/h or more and is operational when the light switch (on the indicator stalk) is placed in the Auto position and the stalk is pushed away from the driver.
Manual Speed Limit Assist (MSLA)
Santa Fe’s Manual Speed Limit Assist (MSLA) function assists the driver in pre-setting a speed limit for the vehicle, which is helpful in situations with reduced speed limits, such as school zones and roadworks.
Lane Following Assist (LFA)
Lane Following Assist (LFA) detects lane markings on the road using the front windscreen-mounted camera, and provides steering assistance to ensure Santa Fe stays in the centre of the lane.
When the system is activated, the indicator on the cluster will illuminate.
The colour of the indicator will change depending on the condition of LFA system. Green indicates that the system is enabled, and white indicates that the system is ready.
Lane Keeping Assist – Line/Road Edge (LKA)
Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) consists of two switchable functions – Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Active LKA. LDW uses the windscreen-mounted camera to detect lane markings and monitor the vehicle’s position in the lane.
Should the vehicle stray from the intended lane without indicators being activated, audible and visual warnings will be issued. The system is in operation at vehicle speeds of 60km/h and above.
The Active LKA function helps prevent the vehicle from straying from the lane and provides steering intervention as the vehicle is about to leave the lane. Where required, LKA provides earlier steering intervention in order to assist the vehicle in staying in the centre of the lane.
Active LKA is operational at speeds of 60km/h or above where lane markings on both sides of the vehicle are detected.
Both LDW and Active LKA are momentarily deactivated whenever turn signals are active. Additionally, the driver must maintain control of the vehicle by holding the steering wheel.
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) monitors for traffic approaching on either side of Santa Fe when reversing out of perpendicular parking spaces.
Should RCCA detect a vehicle approaching, the system will sound a chime and display a warning on the cluster and multimedia screens, and in the corresponding exterior mirror.
In the event the driver does not respond to a warning, the system may activate the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system to apply braking force and help avoid a collision with the approaching vehicle.
The RCCA system utilises the BCA system’s radar sensors, and is in operation when travelling at 8km/h or below. It can detect approaching vehicles travelling at speeds above 5km/h.
Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go
Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go detects the speed and distance of vehicles ahead of Santa Fe.
SCC maintains a safe distance to the vehicle ahead, up to a pre-set speed, between 30km/h and 180km/h.
The Stop & Go function works in stop/start traffic, bringing the vehicle to a stop when appropriate, and then automatically accelerating it back to the original set speed.
If the vehicle is stationary for more than three seconds, SCC will prompt the driver to continue cruise conditions using the steering wheel switches.
Santa Fe’s SCC also features Overtaking Acceleration Assist functionality. With SCC enabled, the driver can indicate and move into a clear passing lane and SCC will quickly accelerate up to its preset speed.
Multi-Collision Brake (MCB)
The Multi-Collision Brake system operates to prevent or reduce the severity of a secondary collision.
The system is activated after the airbags have deployed and, where brake or accelerator pedal input is not detected, applies the brakes to bring Santa Fe safely to a stop.
Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist – Rear (PCA-R)
The Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist system in Highlander warns the driver of obstacles when reversing. If the vehicle is in danger of a collision, a warning will sound and the vehicle can engage emergency braking to prevent a collision. PCA-R is operational at reversing speeds below 10 km/h.
