Car Sales – As we head towards the last quarter of the year car sales are still feeling the effects of supply chain delays and overseas Covid restrictions.
The trend for SUVs continues with some 52% of new car sales now falling into that category. A further 24% are LCV and passenger cars are well and truly lagging.
Out of the top ten selling vehicles 4 were Utes with the HiLux taking top spot. Three were SUVs One was electric, but I’m guessing that is a catch up by Tesla and the remaining two were passenger cars.

Despite all the hype about electric cars, petrol cars are still the dominant sales fuel, followed by diesel. Electric cars and PHEV cars are about even together representing some 1.5% of total sales for July. Hybrid cars fare better with some 9.0% of sales in August.
Toyota retains top spot with more than twice as many sales as number two Mazda. Mitsubishi, Kia and Hyundai make up the top five with Ford, MG, Isuzu Ute, Subaru and Mercedes Benz the top ten.
Note that Nissan has dropped out of the ten due to supply issues.

Car Sales – FCAI releases sales figures for August 2022
The FCAI, the peak body for Australia’s automotive industry, has today released new vehicle sales figures for August 2022.
A total of 95,256 vehicles were sold in August bringing the year-to-date total to 717,575. This result represents a 17.3 per cent increase on the same month in 2021.
FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said this positive result was encouraging amidst the global economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The August VFacts sales are the best August result since 2017. This gives hope that the supply of vehicles to the Australian market is beginning to show signs of improvement,” Mr Weber said.
Mr Weber noted the increase in electric vehicle sales throughout August.
“We have seen strong sales of battery electric vehicles in August, with Tesla alone selling 3,397 vehicles. In the month, EV sales were 4.4 per cent of the total market. This is the highest market share for pure battery electric vehicles ever recorded in a single month in Australia. Year-to-date EV sales are 2 per cent of the total market, hybrids are 7.6 per cent and plug in hybrid vehicles are 0.6 per cent. Combined electrified vehicles are now just over 10 per cent of total sales in 2022,” Mr Weber said.
Car Sales Spread
Sales across most States and Territories increased. The ACT increased 49.8 per cent with 1,410 vehicles sold. New South Wales 40 per cent (30,501); the Northern Territory 4.2 per cent (816); Queensland 11.7 per cent (21,379) and Victoria 18.4 per cent (25,053). Sales in all other States decreased. South Australia -9.7 per cent (5,702); Tasmania -3 per cent (1,611) and Western Australia -6.5 per cent (8,784).
Toyota led the market with a total of 20,616 vehicles sold. Mazda was next with 8,824 followed by Kia (6,780), Hyundai (6,643) and Mitsubishi (6,380).
The Toyota Hi-Lux was the highest selling model with 6,214 sales reported. The Ford Ranger followed with 4,497. Next was Toyota’s RAV4 with 2,482. Then Tesla’s Model 3 (2,380) and Toyota’s Landcruiser (2,379).
Car Sales Key Points:
- The August 2022 market of 95,256 new vehicle sales is an increase of 14,057 vehicle sales or 17.3% against August 2021 (81,199). There were 26.8 selling days in August 2022 compared to 26 in August 2021, resulting in an increase of 656.3 vehicle sales per day.
- The Passenger Vehicle Market is up by 2,658 vehicle sales (15.3%) over the same month last year; the Sports Utility Market is up by 7,590 vehicle sales
(18.5%); the Light Commercial Market is up by 3,236 vehicle sales (16.8%) and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market is up by 573 vehicle sales (15.7%) versus
August 2021. - Toyota was market leader in August, followed by Mazda and Kia. Toyota led Mazda with a margin of 11,792 vehicle sales and 12.3 market share points.
