BMW has expanded its stylish, compact coupe range with the eagerly anticipated BMW 228i Coupe now on sale through BMW dealers across Australia.

BMW Group Australia general manager of sales, Tom Noble, said the arrival of the new BMW 228i Coupe with its superb powertrain and very high level of standard equipment will significantly boost the appeal of the 2 Series Coupe.

“With its supreme combination of performance and efficiency, the 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo engine in the new BMW 228i Coupe has already proven a hit with buyers in the 3 Series and 4 Series ranges and is set to be the sweet spot in the stylish and sporty 2 Series Coupe lineup,” he said.

“This engine, with its impressive power, rorty exhaust note and remarkable efficiency has already received critical acclaim from automotive experts winning its category in the international engine awards for the past two years and is a perfect fit for the sporty two-door BMW 228i Coupe.”

The new BMW 228i Coupe slots in between the entry-level pair of diesel and petrol BMW 220d Coupe and BMW 220i Coupe models and the top-of-the-range BMW M235i Coupe that were launched in February and shares the stunning good looks and dynamic character of those cars.

Longer (+72mm), wider (+32mm) and lower (-5mm), sitting on a 30mm longer and wider (+41mm front / +43mm rear) wheelbase compared to the previous generation compact BMW Coupe, the new models offers more interior space and a powerful, sleek, low-slung appearance.

The short front and rear overhangs, long bonnet, set-back cabin and sweeping roof line are combined in classic sports coupe proportions with the new BMW 228i Coupe gaining further exterior features to give it an even more sporty aesthetic.

Filling the wheelarches are large 18-inch light alloy wheels wrapped with low profile 225/40 front and 245/35 rear tyres; the purposeful front end is distinguished by Bi-Xenon headlights with a headlight washer system; and at the rear, the sports intent of the car is denoted by the dual exhaust pipes. Depending on the choice of either Sport Line or Modern Line packages, the exterior window and mirror trim is finished in either High-Gloss Shadow Line or Chrome Line highlights.

Inside the more spacious four-seater cabin, the sporty styling continues and as a premium small car, the new BMW 228i Coupe features a very extensive list of standard equipment.

Supreme comfort and convenience is assured with sports front seats and the rear 60/40-split bench seat upholstered in high quality Dakota leather, automatic climate control, multi-function sport leather steering wheel, cruise control with braking function, automatic lights and rain sensor windscreen wipers, keyless start/stop and front and rear Park Distance Control all standard.

Providing a premium level of information, entertainment and connectivity, the BMW 228i Coupe is fitted as standard with convenience telephony with extended smartphone connectivity incorporating Bluetooth mobile phone connection, voice control, audio streaming and pairing of multiple devices; Navigation System Business with iDrive Controller and a 6.5-inch high-resolution display; and a six-speaker Stereo audio system with USB and Auxiliary inputs.

Further infotainment is available through the optional BMW ConnectedDrive services that add such things as the internet-based BMW Online news and weather, BMW Remote App, Real Time Traffic Information and Concierge Services.

Standard safety equipment in the BMW 228i Coupe includes six airbags; Dynamic Stability Control with ABS, Brake Assistant, Cornering Brake Control and Dynamic Traction Control; and thanks to its built-in SIM card, an Intelligent Emergency Call function that automatically transfers vehicle data and initiates a phone call to the ConnectedDrive call centre in the event of an accident.

Powering the BMW 228i from 0-100km in just 5.7 seconds is the latest generation 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder petrol engine that combines High Precision Direct Injection, Valvetronic variable valve timing and Double VANOS variable camshaft control to generate a maximum power of 180kW at 5000-6500rpm and peak torque of 350Nm between 1250rpm and 4800rpm.

With a full suite of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies including Auto Start/Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration, gear shift indicator and ECO PRO driving mode to optimise fuel consumption, the BMW 228i Coupe is also very efficient with an EU test cycle fuel consumption of 6.3l/100km and CO2 emissions of 148g/km.

Unmistakable BMW handling, agility and ride comfort are provided by a sophisticated lightweight chassis that uses a double-joint spring strut front and five-link rear suspension combined with variable sport steering and an eight-speed sports automatic transmission with gearshift paddles for manual mode and launch control function.

Drivers can also choose their desired level of on-road performance with the Driving Experience Control offering four modes – COMFORT, ECO PRO, SPORT and SPORT+ – that variously adjust and fine-tune throttle, steering and gearshift responses.
