LA eases parking rules ‘to aid social distancing’

Los Angeles Parking enforcement 3

With less traffic on the road but social distancing requirements adding to delays, do we need the same restrictions that we had in the past.  David Brown reports that Lthe Los Angeles mayour doesn’t think so.

Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti has relaxed parking enforcement across the city as more people are staying at home, but then need more time to do essential run errands.  Keeping your distance at the supermarket may add time but social distancing should not be compromised because of concerns about getting a ticket.

The order includes a freeze on parking fine increases for the next 60 days, an extended grace period for people dropping off or picking up groceries and goods and extended payment deadlines.

Enforcement is being maintained on operations that prioritise health, safety and emergency access including street sweeping around encampments, peak-hour restrictions and repaving operations.

David’s boyhood passion for motor cars did not immediately lead to a professional role in the motor industry. A qualified Civil Engineer he specialised in traffic engineering and transport planning. What followed were various positions including being seconded to a government think-tank for the planning of transport firstly in Sydney and then for the whole of NSW. After working with the NRMA and as a consultant he moved to being an independent writer and commentator on the broader areas of transport and the more specific areas of the cars we drive. His half hour motoring program “Overdrive” has been described as an “informed, humorous and irreverent look at motoring and transport from Australia and overseas”. It is heard on 22 stations across Australia. He does weekly interviews with several ABC radio stations and is also heard on commercial radio in Sydney.
