First-Ever Mazda CX-90 – the largest and most luxurious SUV ever to lead the Mazda range – is now available to order, ahead of its arrival in Australia from August.
Epitomising Family Luxury and redefining Mazda Premium, the First-Ever Mazda CX-90 introduces a three-row seating configuration at the very top end of the longitudinal Large Product group, positioned above the Mazda CX-60.
Up to seven occupants can enjoy every journey in supreme comfort, ensuring the First-Ever Mazda CX-90 is ideal for families with children and the perfect companion for weekday school trips, extra-curricular activities or longer road-trip adventures.
A choice of three comprehensively appointed model grades in the form of Touring, GT and Azami each showcase a culmination of expert craftsmanship and ‘dignified beauty’ of Mazda’s Kodo design philosophy.
They can be paired with either a turbocharged, inline-six cylinder petrol or diesel, both of which employ 48-volt M Hybrid Boost MHEV technology, and deliver exceptional response, remarkable fuel efficiency and superlative driver engagement synonymous with Mazda’s famed Jinba-Ittai philosophy.
Commenting on the introduction of the flagship SUV, Vinesh Bhindi, Managing Director, Mazda Australia, said: “The Mazda CX-90 establishes a new dimension in grand SUV touring. This is more than Mazda’s new flagship SUV: The CX-90 is an expression of exceptional craftsmanship and human-centric technologies, a sophisticated and dynamic vehicle for families and lovers of adventure.”
CX-90 Powertrains
In accordance with Mazda’s rightsizing approach to engine design, both the e-Skyactiv G (turbocharged, 3.3-litre petrol G50e) and e-Skyactiv D (turbocharged, 3.3-litre diesel D50e) inline-sixes available in the First-Ever Mazda CX-90 benefit from Mazda’s M Hybrid Boost 48V mild hybrid technology, which supports the engine at lower speeds while delivering enhanced environmental performance by using regenerative braking to replenish the onboard battery.
Increasing the speed range at which lean burn (lean combustion: high-efficiency combustion with minimal fuel consumption) is possible has contributed to the e-Skyactiv D power unit’s ability to achieve 5.4L/100 km – a class-leading fuel consumption figure, along with CO2 emissions of 143g/km.
This pursuit of efficiency is not at the expense of performance, however, with impressive outputs of 187 kW available at 3,750 rpm and a peak torque of 550 Nm from 1,500 – 2,400 rpm.
D50e engine
Mazda’s engineers have also designed the D50e engine to use surplus air to improve combustion, resulting in a more agile acceleration response, lower Nitrous oxide emissions at high rpm and output, and better thermal efficiency due to a greater lean burn speed range.
With 254 kW of maximum power and 500 Nm of peak torque, the e-Skyactiv G petrol engine with M Hybrid Boost technology is the most powerful mass-production power unit Mazda has developed to-date, yet it is capable of returning 8.2L/100 km and CO2 emissions of 189 g/km.
To achieve this feat, base torque and mid to low engine speeds were optimised by the size of the G50e engine’s displacement, which meant it could be paired with a high output. Mazda’s engineers leveraged the increased air intake resulting from the higher engine displacement and large turbocharger to increase output, and the speed range at which the engine uses the Miller cycle.
The result is exciting acceleration and impressive fuel efficiency thanks in part to its relatively high compression ratio.
Mazda’s Skyactiv-Drive
Distributing the prolific power on tap in both engines is Mazda’s Skyactiv-Drive eight-speed automatic transmission (developed without a torque converter and transmitting torque directly), which sends drive to all four wheels via full-time i-Activ All-Wheel Drive – a rear-biased drive system that affords the CX-90 its neutral and engaging handling characteristics, as well as the ability to venture onto adventure-based terrain.
Drivers can also tailor their experience to suit the journey, with four different switchable driving modes, ranging from Normal, Sport, Off-Road and Towing*. The latter optimises the powertrain to accommodate the increased weight when a towing hitch is mounted to pull a trailer or a bike carrier, and the AWD system is optimised for trailer towing to improve straight line stability and long-distance driving comfort.
CX-90 Space
At 5,100mm in length and 1,994mm wide, and with a 3,120mm wheelbase, First-Ever Mazda CX-90 has an undeniable road presence and offers more capacious interior dimensions in virtually every area compared to the current Mazda CX-9, with matched or even greater shoulder room and head room in every row.
The generous cargo dimensions have been designed for maximum functionality in a wide variety of usage scenarios.
First-Ever Mazda CX-90 offers a larger load space capacity than the current Mazda CX-9, totalling 608 litres overall (including under-floor stage space). This is with both the second- and third-row seating in position. Folding both seating rows flat increases this capacity to 2,025 litres (up to the ceiling and including under-floor storage).
Careful consideration has been given to ease of loading and unloading long objects with the third- and second-row seats folded down. To make it easier to transport long items such as furniture and surfboards with the second- and third-row seats folded flat, Mazda has created a flat tailgate opening by creating a cargo floor area with a 5-degree incline to remove any height difference between the boot floor and the rear trim.
The height of the tailgate opening also makes it easy for families to load items, such as their weekly shopping and sporting equipment.
Accessing the third-row seats is made easy by the design of the rear doors. They feature a larger step to make ingress and egress comfortable. The second-row bench seat also uses the same one-touch walk-in switch as used on the CX-9, for ease of access.

Technology and safety
The CX-90 is the latest model to emerge on Mazda’s Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, a key building block in the company’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 plan. This new core vehicle structure incorporates intelligent mechanical design and a combination of materials to achieve a rigid body shell that carefully manages the transmission of forces from the suspension, helping deliver premium levels of comfort and focused driving dynamics.
The CX-90 also uses Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) to control the attitude of the CX-90 when braking at speed – a technology also found on the iconic Mazda MX-5 sports car.
KPC uses the CX-90’s rear suspension design to generate an anti-lift force that pulls the body down when the brakes are applied. KPC takes full advantage of these suspension characteristics, applying a slight amount of brake pressure to the inner rear wheel when cornering under high lateral G force to suppress roll and stabilise the vehicle’s posture. It is especially effective when driving on winding roads, rougher surfaces, and through faster corners.
The human-centric cockpit in the CX-90 gives the driver a layout for the steering wheel and pedals that is less stressful on their joints, requiring only moderate muscle strength to operate them.
To enhance this oneness between the car and driver, the CX-90 is fitted with Mazda’s Driver Personalisation System. This feature debuted on the first-ever CX-60 mid-size SUV and adjusts the cockpit setup to achieve an ideal driving position for each driver. The system automatically adjusts the driver’s seat to the ideal position based on Mazda’s driving philosophy. It does this by estimating the position of their eyes using the driver monitoring camera, as well as the driver’s height information, which is manually entered by the driver.
Driver Personalisation System
Mazda’s Driver Personalisation System comprises three functions that combine to optimise the connection between car and driver, and facilitate safer and more stress-free driving for each individual driver:
- Automatic driving position guidance
- Automatic setting recovery
- Driver entry/exit assist
These functions make it simple for drivers to achieve their ideal driving position.
The system uses facial recognition to remember each driver’s preferences. When the driver is detected, the CX-90 automatically restores more than 250 stored settings to match their preferences, including vehicle, audio and climate control settings.
The complete suite of Driver Personalisation Functions is available on the CX-90 Azami. The system with auto-setting restoration is available on the CX-90 GT.
i-Activesense driver assistance
An array of i-Activesense driver assistance systems also deliver safety performance for occupants and other road users, including pedestrians.
These include Smart Brake Support (SBS): Turn Across Traffic, Smart Brake Support (SBS): Turn Across Traffic: Front with pedestrian and cycle detection, Emergency Lane Keep Assist (ELK), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) with Vehicle Exit Warning, Adaptive LED headlamps (ALH), Enhanced collision safety performance, Secondary Collision Reduction System.
In addition, the CX-90 Azami is fitted with See-through View. It offers a further evolution of Mazda’s 360° View Monitor (which is fitted to the CX-90 Touring and GT model grades).
See-through View provides a large monitor display that helps the driver see the situation ahead and to the sides of the vehicle (around the wheels) in the direction of travel, even in tight spaces, showing obstacles they might possibly strike when fully turning the steering wheel – all at once on the screen.
This aids in quickly confirming objects the vehicle might come into contact with when starting off or slowing down in tight spaces, such as parking lots or narrow alleys.
See-through View also shows the outline of the CX-90’s body, making it easier to understand the orientation of the car in relation to the obstacles and spaces around it.
Colour choices
The arrival of the CX-90 introduces Mazda’s fourth Takuminuri paint finish: Artisan Red Metallic.
A maturation of Soul Crystal Red Metallic, it is a deeper and darker red that delivers a lustrous translucent, yet crafted colour.
CX-90 customers can alternatively choose from seven different body colours: Deep Crystal Blue Mica, Jet Black Mica, Machine Grey Metallic, Platinum Quartz Metallic, Rhodium White Metallic, Sonic Silver Metallic or Soul Red Crystal Metallic.
