Nissan has re-entered the lucrative hatch market with the arrival of the all new Pulsar hatch range. While there are four models in the range, we recently test drove the ST-L, the second in the collection. With an estimated drive-away price of $28,083*, the Pulsar Hatch faces some stiff competition from a densely populated market.
The ST-L shares the same 96kW/174Nm 1.8-litre petrol engine as its sedan sibling, available in both 6 speed manual and CVT, the latter of which we drove. The Pulsar Hatch benefits from what Nissan dubs Smooth Start Assist control providing responsive and even acceleration as well as a reasonably comfortable ride. With a combined fuel consumption of around 6.7L/100km and 161g of CO2 per km, the ST-L is good for your wallet and the environment.
In such a competitive market, there are two main points that distinguish a hatch from the rest – price and features. The ST-L boasts 16” alloy wheels, fog lights, rear spoiler, single CD player with MP3 capability, Auxiliary input jack, AM/FM radio, USB/iPod+ connectivity, Bluetooth and 6 speakers. You do however miss out on Bluetooth audio streaming unless you opt for the SSS model. Remote keyless entry, cruise control and a 4.3 inch screen are all added to the list of inclusions.
The styling is nothing fancy but it is functional and clean cut. Disappointingly the only standard exterior colours are black and white. Interior wise, the same old uninspiring metallic grey and black scheme could do with some updating as it falls short of competitors. However, looks aren’t everything and where the Pulsar Hatch far exceeds competitors is it ample rear leg room. There will be no squished passengers here and that is a relief as a hatch really is bought with the intention of being able to transport 4-5 people. Another key area of the Pulsar hatch is the low beltline that provides excellent forward and side vision.
The premium cloth and well bolstered seats are very comfortable, easily adjusted and combined with a leather wrapped tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel, provide a very comfortable driving position. The instrument cluster featuring speedometer, tachometer, odometer and trip meter are well laid out and provide all necessary information including instant & average fuel economy meter, distance to empty and outdoor temperature display. Storage throughout the car is adequate and the boot space is on par.
Safety is covered with the Nissan Pulsar Hatch receiving a 5 star ANCAP rating. The long list of safety features include anti-locking brakes with electronic breakforce distribution, break assist, vehicle dynamic control, traction control and 6 airbags. Nissan’s Pulsar Hatch provides value for money, especially in the ST-L which is equipped with a long list of standard features and provides stand-out interior room and comfort.
