Nissan Z Proto concept at the 2021 Chicago Auto Show

Nissan Z Proto- The Chicago motor show has thrown up a few interesting vehicles soon to be on the market and a couple of concept cars, one that reflects the past and one that reflects the future.

The Nissan Proto concept was first revealed late last year but now, for the first time, makes it to a US motor show.

Nissan notes that it is not a production vehicle, at this stage, but it clearly a derivative of their 370Z.

Contrary to most design trends the Proto has a very smooth design finish without the angles, creases, pods and huge grilles that festoon many modern cars.

It has a twin turbo V6 engine and a manual gear box so it carries on the Z tradition rather than the quest for electrification.

The shape of the hood and the canted, teardrop-shaped LED headlights are both unmistakable reminders of the original Z. The rectangular grille’s dimensions are similar to the current model with the addition of oval grille fins to offer an updated modern look. The form continues to exude both sportiness and elegance.

On the inside the Z Proto’s cabin aims to seamlessly blend modern technology with vintage Z touches. Hints of Zs past can be found in the Z Proto’s instrumentation, but in a modern interpretation that utilizes a 12.3-inch digital display that is arranged to help the driver grasp it at a glance, such as the redline shift point at the twelve o-clock position. The vintage steering wheel offers the quick access to controls and yellow accents are found throughout the cabin. Seats feature special accent piping and layered seat material to create depth.

The rear takes inspiration from the 300ZX (Z32) taillights, reinterpreted for the modern world. Set within a rectangular black section that runs across the rear and wraps around the outer edges, the LED taillights convey a sharp glow.

Lightweight carbon fibre treatments on the side skirts, front lower lip and rear valance ensure nimble performance. 19-inch alloy wheels and dual exhausts complete the Z Proto’s striking road presence.
