Subaru BRZ Coupe S 2022 review

Is the Subaru BRZ any good

BRZ Coupe S – Subaru released the all new BRZ back in January 2022 and it’s been a roaring success for them since.   2022 Subaru BRZ Coupe SAs mentioned in the launch review, the new BRZ is better in every way to the model it replaces.

Last week we drove the automatic top spec S model, priced from around $43,990 plus the usual costs.

Regular listeners will know that I am larger than the average bear at 190cm and for me to fit in something like the BRZ is a rarity, but fit I did, and relatively comfortably. If you are less that 185cm then you will have no problems. My daughter loved it and it was perfect size for her.

The key to the BRZ is balance. It’s not outright fast, but find a twisty long piece of road and there are not many cars that will pull away from it. It sits like a limpet to the road, corners flat and yet retains composure on all surfaces.

Its powered by a 4 cylinder boxer engine that delivers a handy 174 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque with spritely acceleration. My choice is the automatic transmission, not only because my long legs have difficulty fitting in to change gears, but also because the 6 speed AT is smooth and extracts maximum benefit from the engine.

Inside the ambience is a mix of old school sports car and new technology. The seats are comfortable and everything is focused on the driver.

The BRZ provides an awful lot of fun for not much money.

Subaru BRZ Quick Thoughts

  • I love the look and feel of the BRZ.
  • It provides inexpensive genuine driver engagement and FUN
  • The older model was good, the new model is substantially better all around
  • Wireless connectivity and charging would be appreciated
  • Rear seats are useless
  • This would be so much better as a liftback two seat coupe.
  • This would also provide a little more front seat slide for taller drivers.
  • Did I mention the BRZ is FUN!

What is good?

  • Classic very cool design
  • Old school meets new technology
  • Sporty balanced ride and performance

What is not so good?

  • Rear seats are useless
  • Virtually no boot space
  • Small central screen

Sports coupe’s are becoming rare beasts indeed. There isnt much direct competition for the BRZ. Obviously the Toyota 86, which is its twin, or the Mazda MX-5. A little further afield is the Toyota GR Yaris, Subaru WRX, or the Kia Cerato GT
