Toyota Corolla Cross launch details

Toyota Corolla Cross is another smaller crossover SUV styled vehicle released by Toyota. It sits somewhere between the C-HR and RAV 4.

Corolla Cross comes in 3 models. GX, GXL and Atmos. There is the choice of petrol and hybrid powertrains and two-wheel drive or electronic all-wheel drive on the hybrid versions.

They look like a smaller RAV 4 and inside it is exactly as you would expect from the Toyota formula. I do like the new central tablet though, with new-generation Toyota multimedia system.  It’s a vast improvement.

As you would expect the Corolla Cross, based on the multi platform drives smoothly and comfortably, and does very little wrong. It is ideally suited as a city runabout that has room for longer trips when desired.

Toyota now has in the smaller SUV style segment the Yaris Cross, C-HR, Rav 4 and now the Corolla Cross. The Corolla Cross however leaves all the others behind with the latest safety sense package and connected services.

Corolla Cross is priced from $33,000 through to around $49,000 plus the usual costs.

Corolla Cross – Toyota has released the new Corolla Cross. This is yet another smaller SUV that sits alongside the Yaris Cross, C-HR and RAV-4.        This article focuses on model details. Driving impressions to follow shortly

However the Corolla Cross has advanced safety and connected technologies, excellent packaging and practicality, and the choice of petrol and hybrid powertrains and two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Built on the same TNGA-C platform as its Corolla hatch and sedan siblings, the all-new Corolla Cross offers significantly higher ride height, interior flexibility and class-leading boot space up to 436 litres (GX & GXL petrol) with the rear seat backs in place.

What does the Corolla Cross look like?

In short it’s like a mini-me RAV 4.

That’s not a bad thing as the RAV 4 is pretty appealing.

Eight exterior paint colours are available on the Corolla Cross, consisting of Glacier White, Frosted White, Stunning Silver, Eclipse Black, Atomic Rush, Lunar Blue, Moondust Grey and Jungle Khaki.¹¹

Reasonable room for someone my size front and back.

I particularly like the new central screen, it’s a vast improvement on the more pedestrian and bland Toyota offerings in some models.

Toyota multimedia system.

The Corolla Cross is the first Toyota in Australia to feature the new-generation Toyota multimedia system.

The system can be controlled via a large 8.0-inch touchscreen display or steering wheel controls, and offers wireless Apple CarPlay^®2, wired Android Auto™³, DAB+ digital radio⁴ and superb sound reproduction from a six-speaker audio system.

Building on the infotainment system, the Corolla Cross features the most comprehensive Toyota Connected Services⁵ functionality of any Toyota model to date, using a data communication module (DCM) inside the vehicle and the myToyota Connect smartphone app to provide real-time remote information and convenience for owners.

Through the myToyota Connect app, owners can undertake such things as remotely check the status of the doors and lights, access information such as the vehicle’s last known location and recent trips, or start the engine or climate control.

Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver assistance features offers new technologies including lane change assist and safe exit assist, providing further security and peace of mind for drivers.⁶

Corolla Cross Engine and drivetrain

Power for the petrol variants comes courtesy of a thermally efficient 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine developing 126kW at 6600rpm and 202Nm from 4400-4900rpm, driving the front wheels via a sequential ten-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Hybrid versions employ a 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine teamed to an electric motor on the front axle for a combined maximum power output of 146kW and a low 4.3l/100km¹⁰ fuel consumption on the combined cycle test.

Hybrid AWD variants add a second electric drive motor on the rear axle while fuel consumption remains as low as 4.4l/100km¹⁰ on the combined cycle test.
