Toyota HiLux 2WD Single Cab Chassis Ute

Toyota HiLux Workmate – Work Utes and Vans are the backbone of small business, especially over the last 2 years with all the issues we have faced.

This week I’m driving the Toyota HiLux Single Cab trayback 2WD Ute. This comes with a 2.7L petrol engine and a 5 speed MT.

This really is the entry level model with a modest 122kW and 245Nm available. It’s also a little bit thirsty as we averaged 12.7l/100k on our weeks drive.

Inside it is comfortable enough for people under 180cm tall so my 190cm frame was a bit squished.

While it does have some good features like Apple Car Play and Android Auto, it misses out on basic safety features like a reversing camera and blind spot indicators.

What it does have though is a 2500kg towing capacity, a hefty 1225kg payload and a huge 2.55m x 1.8m tray that is ready for whatever you want to load on it.

Having a 1225kg payload means that the springs are fairly stiff and driving the Ute without a load is an exercise in self punishment. You bounce and jiggle around. That’s the trade off.

Priced from around $24,225 plus the usual costs its relatively inexpensive, but I would go for a diesel ever time Unfortunately in a HiLux you have to go to a 4X4 and They add some $10,000 for the diesel and dual range drivetrain.
