After driving the Peugeot 3008 at the end of the year, I was left with a jaw dropping experience.

So when I heard about the 5008 I was itching to find out if it was just as good.

And let’s say it wasn’t far off.

Under the microscope was the Peugeot 5008 Allure; the base model, seven-seater, mid-sized SUV.

Priced from $42,990, the 5008 garners a lot of attention from people in the know, with looks and even question in the car park.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Exterior

The Peugeot 5008 is just a larger version of the 3008 and is just as attractive from the outside with an elongated SUV shape.

The Allure is adorned in a lot of chrome highlights and from the side profile is almost Range Rover Evoque-esque.

Interior

Being similar to its smaller brother, the 5008 has the same internal styling with much the same layout and finishes.

A mix of different surfaces on the dashboard including a grey fabric-like lining, and an interesting harp design is pleasing to occupants.

The centre console also favours the driver though there is a separation on the passenger side concealing a large storage area.

The centre console houses airplane style switches, a rocker gear shifter, and an HUD touchscreen.

And fortunately like the 3008, the driver gets a large 12” single screen instrument panel possessing awesome graphics and transitions adding that little bit more flair.

Also enhancing the modern feel are the leather seats plus grey fabric inserts, but of course the real differentiator are the two extra seats in the back.

The seats fold in flat and fit in compactly into the boot and can be pulled up via a strap locking in hard.

But these are on a needs basis as they are small, cramped and flat and given the overall size of the vehicle, leaves little space in the boot when the seats are up.

Middle row seats slide forward easily to allow for access, and individually meaning each three passengers can adjust their seat accordingly.

Good news is all had child seat tether points and ISOFIX.

Features

The Peugeot 5008 Allure has an impressive list of features for a base model you almost don’t need to even consider the GT Line or GT.

Aside from advanced safety features (covered in a later section), you get a powered hands-free tailgate, rear window blinds, rear tray tables, rear air vents with controls, a sport mode, push button start, paddle shifters, electric park brake, flat-bottomed and topped steering wheel.

The A/C has dual climate control but they are hard to adjust as it’s all inconveniently controlled from the touchscreen which isn’t to my liking.

There are the switches below but these are only for selection of categories.

No panoramic sunroof, powered seats or memory function but this is available as options.

Drive and Engine

The other thing I remember fondly about the Peugeot 3008 was the impeccable drive, and I expected no less in the 5008.

And it drives as well as the smaller version and is stable, quiet with good power, averaging 8.2L/100km.

On the whole it feels solid, has direct steering and responsive brakes though the suspension is a bit firm but not to the point of being uncomfortable.

As in the 3008 I found the flat top to the steering wheel odd to turn, like there was a piece missing.

The electric park brake could do with hill hold or hill assist as the vehicle rolls back ever so slightly when taking off.

However, there is something about the 3008 that I prefer.

The 360 camera view and sensor make easy work of parking and the driver can enjoy the great graphics of the display with comprehensive information and sat-nav guidance.

Summary

It really is amazing what is on offer in just the entry level model.

With an automatic powered tailgate, electric park brake with push button start, rear window blinds, rear tray tables, seven seats, large touchscreen and driver info display screen you won’t be disappointed.

It’s got a fresh, vibrant look and feel with a well-rounded drive to boot.

Peugeot sets a good standard, pity that not more know about it but these that do appreciate them and know the quality of their vehicles.
